Kulika Uganda trains farmers in ecological organic agriculture, and provides support to the trained farmers. Ecological Organic Agriculture is a holistic system that sustains the health of ecosystems. and relies on functional cycles adapted to local conditions, rather than the use of synthetic inputs which have adverse effects on total health (human, animal,plant and environmental). Organic agriculture is a production system that sustains the health of soils, ecosystems and people. It relies on ecological processes, biodiversity and cycles adapted to local conditions, rather than the use of inputs with adverse effects. Organic agriculture combines tradition, innovation and science to benefit the shared environment and promote fair relationships and a good quality of life for all involved.

We promote sound strategies,practices and skills in crop production, processing, marketing and consumption.We particularly work with farmers in self-help groups that depend on the farm for a living. We want to build their capacity to reflect on their farm challenges as a starting point and form a right attitude towards organic agriculture. We support the farmer to analyze the resources on the farm. We believe that once your capacity is built, your attitude is formed, and with the available resources, a person should be able to produce food and sell the surplus for income. As a trained farmer, we encourage you to join with your group members to start voluntary savings and loan associations for self-help development and form marketing association / cooperative societies to facilitate produce marketing.After a period of support, usually between 3-5 years, we allow the farmers space to do it on their own, with limited backstopping from Kulika.

We are particularly encouraged when the farmers are practice what they have learnt, going beyond the training protocol by being innovative. We are thrilled by the work of hardworking farmers who by their effort give the organization a chance to rethink alternative approaches to make it even better.

We work towards long term relationships with farmers groups and individual within the groups. The nature of our support is aimed at ensuring that a household has got food and income;food through utilizing the built capacity in ecological agriculture and income through supporting the marketing of the farm produce. We build the capacity of farmers to carry out farmer to farmer extension. Initially, we give farm support and guidance to enable this to happen.
